The European Commission has granted the first request for the European Patent for "Viagra," which allows for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The application is for a single drug formulation of the pill that works against erectile dysfunction and for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The European Patent for "Viagra" has already been granted to a leading pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca.
It is the first time the patent has been granted in the European Union, meaning that the first use of a drug to treat erectile dysfunction was only in its initial formulation, but that the drug could now be used in any dose and duration.
The patent for "Viagra" was granted on 5 March 2013.
About Viagra
As part of its approval process, AstraZeneca has decided to give the patent holder the option of commercialising a single generic equivalent of the brand-name Viagra for the treatment of impotence and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
However, it should be noted that the patent has already been filed on 10 June this year and the patent will still be valid for at least three years.
This means that the company will need to market a single-branded version of the drug in the EU. In addition, the pharmaceutical company will need to demonstrate that the new generic is not significantly different to the branded version and will need to pay a significant royalty.
The drug is a drug that is marketed under the name "Sildenafil Citrate" (as tadalafil).
The patent for "Sildenafil Citrate" has already expired, and the patent for the generic version of the drug has already been granted.
It is important to note that the patent for "Viagra" expires in 2014. As such, the patent will still be valid for at least three years.

1. Inventor: Sildenafil Citrate, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Viagra.
